In 2022 there are multiple metaverses to choose from; Decentraland, Sandbox, and Spatial.
But that begs the question, which one is right for your use case?
To simplify your process we have divided metaverses into 5 sections to help you understand the pros and cons of each platform to help you make an informed decision.
– Accessibility
– Interactivity
– Ease of use
– Purchase of Land
– Other Barriers/Obstacles
Spatial
Spatial is a platform that allows for self-contained metaverse spaces to create immersive experiences.
Accessibility:
5/5 Stars
Spatial can be accessed through a Web Browser (Firefox/Chrome) or a mobile device (Through an app). Spatial also provides full VR support natively allowing for even more immersion through a VR headset like the Meta Quest, HTC Vive etc.
All you need is the link to the space to join the platform and Voila! You’re in!
It is one of the most user-friendly metaverses allowing for a wide variety of devices to access the platform.
Interactivity:
3/5 Stars
Spatial allows users to communicate through voice and video.
However, it does not allow for very interactive environments (Buttons, interactive options)
This makes spatial the perfect platform for human interaction (Such as networking events, press conferences etc). There is a limitation when it comes to gamified experiences through interactive environments that can be created better on other platforms. However, we can create some
You can also make your avatar do certain “Gestures” or the actual term, “Emotes” where your avatar can wave, dance or celebrate.
Ease of Use:
4/5 Stars
Spatial is a very user-friendly platform with limited navigation and easy-to-use controls. The experience is very intuitive and smooth compared to some other platforms.
It’s arguably the best platform for people who are not very tech savvy and are new to the metaverse.
Purchase of Land:
5/5 Stars
Land does not need to be bought in spatial. We can create self-contained metaverse spaces that allow you to create spaces and experiences that can be shared with a link to your audiences.
Other Barriers:
3/5 Stars
Spatial as a platform only allows for 50 people to be in one space at a time and then up to 500 people in instances of 50 each.
For large-scale events with a speaker/host, it creates a limitation on the number of guests you can invite.
Also, gamification experiences cannot be created with interactability. Other platforms are better suited for gamification experiences.
Decentraland
Decentraland: The world’s most advanced metaverse.
Decentraland is a 3D virtual world browser-based platform. Users may buy virtual plots of land in the platform as NFTs via the MANA cryptocurrency, which uses the Ethereum blockchain. It was opened to the public in February 2020 and is overseen by the nonprofit Decentraland Foundation.
Accessibility:
3/5 Stars
Decentraland is a metaverse that can be accessed through a browser on a desktop.
We recommend using Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
Interactivity:
5/5 Stars
Decentralized allows for multiple different ways to interact with other users and also with the world environment. There is voice chat as well as text chat in the world. The text chat allows you to talk to other players in your vicinity.
Being a very advanced platform, decentraland allows for the creation of very gamified experiences from dialogue boxes to collectables in the environment and even elevators.
Users can also click buttons to trigger things in the environment like opening doors,
You can also make your avatar do certain “Gestures” or the actual term, “Emotes” where your avatar can wave, dance or celebrate allowing you to freely express yourself.
Ease of Use:
3.5/5 Stars
Since it is a huge open world with lots of space to explore it gets overwhelming for new users and the lack of a tutorial makes it a little difficult for first-timers. However, the community is very helpful and does a great job of teaching you all the things one can do.
Purchase of Land:
3/5 Stars
You buy LAND in decentraland in parcels and own them in NFT form. The price of a land parcel in Decentraland varies depending on its location. A parcel near the Genesis Plaza, for example, will cost more than one in another district. The purchase of land creates a barrier to entry for a lot of people.
Each parcel of land is 16 meters by 16 meters and can be either bought in the marketplace (Opensea) or rented from other owners on mutually agreed terms.
Other Barriers:
4/5 Stars
Considering the size and scale of Decentraland it requires relatively modern and higher quality hardware to run. It cannot run very smoothly on older computer configurations.
For more in-depth hardware requirements you can check the Decentraland Website.
The second barrier is the LAND cost. It creates a barrier to entry for a lot of people/brands who want to create their own experiences in decentraland. However, renting is a great solution to overcome this problem.
Sandbox
The Sandbox is the third-largest metaverse based on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows users to create, share, and monetize their assets (like real estate) and gaming experiences. People can own assets, play, build, and own their properties and in-game assets in the virtual world.
Accessibility:
3/5 Stars
It is a browser-based metaverse that can be accessed through your desktop browser or through an application that you can download on your desktop. We recommend Chrome or Firefox to access it.
Interactivity:
5/5 Stars
Being a gaming metaverse it allows for extensive gamification opportunities from mini-games, and huge interactive environments to custom items that can be introduced into the environment.
Since the sandbox was built as a game it allows for unbelievable amounts of interaction options. The sandbox comes with a custom world builder so you can build your own metaverse experience on your parcel of land.
From custom items to environments and even full game quests complete with objectives can be achieved in the Sandbox.
Multiple brands and companies from Addidas to HSBC have bought land in the sandbox and are building experiences on them for consumers.
Ease of Use:
4/5 Stars
Sandbox does a relatively better job at educating new players through tutorials and a very approachable game-style sensibility.
Purchase of Land
5/5 Stars
Just like decentraland you need to buy a parcel of land in the form of an NFT from the marketplace (Opensea). The lowest price for a piece of LAND is 1.648 ETH and is 96×96 meters in size.
Other Barriers:
4/5 Stars
The Sandbox is in its pre-mature phase where the economy isn’t stable and while it may seem like a sustainable environment, the SAND token is yet to reach its full potential.
The sophisticated process of tokenizing the in-game assets and providing the users with the ability to utilize the assets as they see fit is one of the most prominent aspects of The Sandbox metaverse. Players are encouraged to be a part of the ecosystem and unlike a centralized means of governance, peer-to-peer trading is encouraged which further contributes to the lucrative opportunities.
However, this creates an in-game economy that is dependent on the real-world currency which to some can also be considered a barrier.
